Using the AvoOwner online trading platform, traders can buy and sell entire orchards, rows in orchards or just a few trees.
Choosing avocado trees depends on your investment objective. If you buy trees that were just planted the value of the trees are at its lowest price. As the tree grows bigger the value increases because of the increases in yield. You buy at a low price and sell when your trees are bigger and producing crop.
Trees older than 6 years are capable to produce very profitable commercial yields for at least 15 to 20 years.
AvoOwner’s orchards are designed according to strict protocols for contours and drainage systems in order to prevent soil erosion. Young trees are planted on ridges, which promote drainage and reduce the risk of root rot.
Avocado orchards typically consist of about 10-15 rows per orchard which consist of about 200 to 880 avocado trees depending on the planting space and block size.
We currently have 27 orchards, and in the process to establish an additional 4 orchards.
Commercial cultivars in the orchards such as Fuerte are for early bearing and others such as Hass and Ryan are late bearing in our area and specifically grown to ensure a greater supply when availability is limited.
Harvesting, packing & Sales
Harvesting starts when the fruit’s moisture content is at the required level for every cultivar. Fruits are hand-picked and clippers are sanitised to protect the plants from disease. Harvesting crates are placed between the orchard rows to minimise the distance that pickers have to walk to empty their picking bags.
At the packhouse, avocados pass through a sanitation bath. Fruit is mechanically sized, packed, and then rapidly cooled in high-humidity coolers to 5,5°C. Once cooled, the avocados are shipped to Europe, the Far East and the UK. The portion of the harvest reserved for the local market is sent to AvoFit for retail sales.
Avocados' nutritional value 'justifies water use'
No other food offers the same nutritional value per litre of water used to harvest it, according to WAO. The only food that provides many healthy nutrients to the body and consumes sustainable water levels is the avocado. Read the full article...
